Enjoy the great outdoors on this wilderness snowmobile safari to the heart of nature. The trail traverses rugged fells and narrow valleys before coming to the first stop, where you have the chance to try ice fishing and snowshoe walking. You will then continue onward through the forest – perhaps coming across a herd of reindeer searching for their favorite food, moss and lichen, buried under as much as one meter of snow. Keep your eyes open also for other forest animals searching for food! The weather in Lapland can change quickly – ranging from cold, blizzard conditions to sunshine over crisp and fresh snow – the snowmobile trail we follow may change accordingly. A delicious soup lunch will be served during the day.
Good to know:
- This adventure requires basic physical fitness and is recommended for children of 15 years or older.
- Solo driving possibility. Supplement for solo driving 85 € / person.
Dress warmly and travel independently to the safari center in central Saariselkä. Here, listen to a safety briefing and instructions on riding your 2-person snowmobile. Then, when you’re ready, don your supplied helmet and thermal suit and set off with an expert guide leading the way.
Inhale the pure Lapland air as you cruise deep into the remote Lapland countryside. Follow trails around empty forests and fells and take turns to drive and ride your snowmobile as you wish.
Arrive at a frozen lake and head onto the ice for some ice fishing. Cut a hole in the ice, drop a line, and while you wait for a bite, hear how the Lapland peoples have used this technique for centuries to sustain themselves in winter. If you’re lucky, you’ll bring in a catch.
Afterward, strap on some snowshoes, and with instructions from your guide, take a short hike through the snow. Feel the thrill as you step easily over deep drifts using your new Arctic footwear, leaving crisp tracks behind you.
Also, ride your snowmobile into the forest, following different trails according to the weather on the day. Watch for forest animals and wild reindeer foraging in the snow for lichen. There’s a good chance of sightings and your guide will explain how these hardy animals can snuffle through three feet (one meter) of snow to reach their favorite food.
During your expedition, stop for lunch in a traditional kota. Warm up by the fire and enjoy a hearty meal such as reindeer meat casserole or salmon or reindeer meat broth, served with tea, coffee or water.
When the time comes, ride back to Saariselkä on your snowmobile, where your expedition ends at the safari center.
